Approximately 30,000 years ago, someone crafted and polished a piece of siltstone into a phallus, a remarkable artifact discovered in Germany’s Hohle Fels Cave. Measuring about 19.2 centimeters (7½ inches) long, the object was reconstructed from 14 fragments. Marks on the stone suggest it may also have been used for working flint.
